Vitorino confident of developing Lao football on international stage

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) – Lanexang United’s Coach acknowledged their next match would be tougher as they travel to Myanmar to face Yadanarbon FC on December 27.

Lanexang United’s Coach Mr Leonardo Vitorino is upbeat about developing local football into a consistently competitive force on the international stage.

His upbeat assessment follows Lanexang United’s 2-1 win over SHB Da Nang FC (Vietnam) in the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2016 at Chao Anouvong Stadium on Saturday night.

Speaking at the post match press conference Mr Vitorino said he was pleased with the team’s efforts as he tested players in many new positions on home soil, but acknowledged their next match would be tougher as they travel to Myanmar to face Yadanarbon FC on December 27.

“We plan to test our team in a friendly match before taking on Yadanarbon FC,” Vitorino said.

SHB Da Nang FC also takes on Yadanarbon FC on December 23.

Midfielder Soukaphone Vongchiengkham was awarded Man of the Match and eight million kip for his efforts in the opening Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2016 encounter.

“Our team doesn’t have any footballers at the super star level but we try to play as a team and we’ll train harder for the next match,” Soukaphone said.

“Yadanarbon FC is a strong opponent for us but we will try to do best and hopefully beat them.”

In last year’s Toyota Mekong Club Championship, the Lao Premier League winners Lao Toyota FC were eliminated in the first round.

Five clubs are playing for the 2016 championship title: Boeung Ket Angkor FC (Cambodia), Lanexang United FC (Laos), Yadanarbon FC (Myanmar), Buriram United FC (Thailand) and SHB Da Nang FC (Vietnam).

Toyota Mekong Club Championship matches are being held from November 2016 to January 8 2017 in each of the five Mekong countries. While Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam battle for a semi-final spot, Cambodia will go straight to the semi-final as it was runner-up in last year’s tournament. Similarly, Thailand will proceed directly to the finals as it was overall champion in 2015.

The total prize money for this year’s tournament is US$173,000 of which US$75,000 will be presented to the overall champion.
